PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO – Amongst the latest news regarding the development of small hydropower plants (sHPP) in Montenegro, is a statement issued on Thursday, 23rd May, by the Minister of Economy Dragica Sekulić that Montenegrin Government asked for a revision of all documentation regarding existing sHPP projects.

While the Montenegrin Government stopped all future requests for new small hydropower plants in 2016, concessions granted before that are still under development. The latest request by the Government to revise all documentation (studies, permits, etc.) issued for concessions granted before 2016 is a big step forward in the fight against the explosion of sHPPs in the Balkans.

As Dragica Sekulić said, the revision was requested to investigate if there were any irregularities during the documentation collection phase and whether concession contracts are legal and based on relevant documents.

WWF Adria, with local partners, is currently analysing all concession contracts for any suspicious or illegal activities. Should they be proven, WWF Adria will take appropriate actions and ask the Ministry of Economy and the Montenegrin Government for termination of such contracts.
