Management of large carnivores in the countries of the region
At the meeting, representatives of relevant institutions, experts and scientists on large carnivores discussed approaches to managing the populations of large carnivores, as well as reaching agreements on establishing a coordination body for large carnivores and an intervention team, collecting data for monitoring and long-term management strategy for bears.
The meeting was attended by 35 participants who actively participated in the topics presented by representatives of the Republic of Kosovo: Jeton Raka - Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning, and Infrastructure, Miradije Gerguri - Deputy Head of the Nature Protection Department in the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning, and Infrastructure, as well as Albert Behrami - Advisor to the Minister, Naser Krasniqi - Head of the Department for Management of Protected Areas and Hunting, and Tahir Ahmeti - Manager of the Forestry Department in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Development, and Menderes Ibra from the Forestry Agency in Kosovo. Lectures were given by experts Fatos Lajqi from the environmental organization ERA, Afrim Mahmuti from Four Paws, and Đuro Huber and Slaven Reljić from the Secretariat of the DiBaPi LC Platform.
In the second part of the workshop, experts discussed the possibilities and models for establishing an intervention team for large carnivores, which, together with the existing intervention team for bears led by Four Paws, would enable even better prevention, education, reduction of risks, and conflicts between humans and large carnivores.
The Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning, and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Development, the DiBaPi Platform Secretariat, and WWF Adria will continue education throughout 2024, as well as strengthening the capacity of members of the intervention team to deal more successfully with interventions in the field, and will also develop a Protocol for the actions of members of the Intervention Team for the Republic of Kosovo.
