Fish Forum 2024
This week (19-23 February), WWF joins the Fish Forum2024, the largest scientific gathering dedicated to fisheries and related issues in the region, that takes place in Antalya (Türkiye).
Particular attention will be dedicated this year to climate change and innovative technologies. From Monday 19th until Friday 23th, several workshops and debates will address issues like small-scale fisheries, bycatch, shark and sturgeon management and -conservation, as well as selectivity and decarbonization.
In line with this, WWF and the Friends of SSF will be present in Antalya to share their expertise and discuss innovative approaches aimed at enhancing climate resilience in small-scale fisheries and supporting scientific research. This 2024 edition marks a key milestone in the Regional plan of Action for SSF (RPOA-SSF) as the political commitment is reaching its- mid-term. The RPOA-SSF stands out as the sole regional political commitment that builds on the SSF Guidelines, demonstrating a unique commitment to fostering sustainable practices and equitable development within small-scale fisheries communities across the region. As climate change is increasingly impacting fishing communities in the region, the RPOA-SSF represents a unique policy instrument to help fishers access the needed financial and technological support in the effort to mitigate and adapt to some of these impacts.
Later this year, fisheries stakeholders from across the world will be invited to participate in the SSF Summit in Rome (5-7 July 2024). A Mediterranean-focused event will serve as an key moment to evaluate and assess the progress of the mid-term implementation of the RPOA-SSF, providing a comprehensive overview of our current standing in advancing sustainable small-scale fisheries within the region. These discussions will help prioritize initiatives and incorporate scientific information into decision-making processes, in anticipation of the following 36th Session of FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) scheduled on 8-12 July 2024 in Rome.
