Amazon of Europe Day: Together for a Living Biosphere Reserve!
Today we celebrate the Amazon of Europe Day!
The first Amazon of Europe day was dedicated to Martin Schneider-Jacoby from EuroNatur, who dedicated his life to the conservation of Europe’s natural heritage and dreamed of the 5-country UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube.
For more than 20 years, WWF has been working with governments and all relevant stakeholders in Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia to protect this unique natural and cultural treasure. This was recognized by UNESCO which will soon proclaim this area as the world's first 5-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube and the largest riverine protected area in Europe.
In our work, we focus on solutions that will restore and protect nature while contributing to the well-being of local communities - from river and wetland restoration, implementation of nature-based solutions to the creation of sustainable business practices. The Amazon of Europe represents a global contribution to nature conservation and the preservation of our planet’s biodiversity.
We marked this Amazon of Europe Day last weekend in Koprivnica, where the “Amazon of Europe” mural was created. This mural represents part of this stunning landscape and highlights characteristic bird species. Also, young artists had a chance to learn more about this specific art form of street art.
