IWRMK Program in Kosovo: Strengthening Civil Society Organizations and Stakeholder Participation in Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo

The involvement of civil society is crucial to enable integrated and transparent management of Kosovo’s water resources

The Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo (IWRM-K) Program is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by Skat Consulting Ltd. (Switzerland) in consortium with the Environment Agency Austria. “Strengthening Civil Society Organizations and Stakeholder Participation” (SPWMK) in Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo” is one of the key activities of the IWRM-K Program, which will be conducted by a consortium of Non-Governmental Organizations gathering WWF Adria, the Institute for Management and Development, EcoZ and Ecopana.

The IWRM-K Program seeks to build long-lasting water resources management capacities at national and river basin levels in line with Kosovo’s socio-economic and political priorities, as well as the needs of future sustainable development. The Program appointed WWF Adria and its local partners to complement and strengthen the river basin management planning in three of the four Kosovo’s river basins (Ibar, Morava, and Lepenc), through supporting stakeholder engagement and their capacity building.

“Involvement of civil society is crucial to enable integrated and transparent management of Kosovo’s water resources and ensure the sustainability of decision-making results by awareness-raising in the local population and development of lasting stakeholder platforms at river basin level.”, WWF Adria’s Team Leader for the SPWMK Activity, Zoran Mateljak.

WWF Adria and their local partner seek to design and support the creation of stakeholder participation mechanisms in the management of each of the three river basins, develop and strengthen water management constituencies among civil society to continue engaging in water management beyond the scope of the IWRM-K Program and set the groundwork for practical engagement of CSOs in improving water management through their own projects.

“Strengthening Civil Society Organizations and Stakeholder Participation in Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo” (SPWMK) is an activity funded through the IWRM-K Program, by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) implemented by Skat Consulting Ltd. (Switzerland) in consortium with the Environment Agency Austria (EAA). The activity started on 12th January 2021 and lasts until 11th January 2023. The total budget of this WWF Adria-implemented activity is € 233,300.
