WWF ADRIA YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND MOBILIZATION OFFICER FOR COMMUNICATION
Position title: Project officer for communication
Reports to: Conservation Director
Location: Belgrade, Serbia
Starting/Ending: 2020/2022
Engagement: Part-time position (50%), fixed-term contract
WWF is one of the world’s leading non-governmental and non-profit organizations for nature conservation. The organization is proud of its supporters of over five million people.
WWF Adria is representing WWF within the countries of Western Balkans with approximately 60 employees. It operates through a WWF Adria office in Zagreb (Croatia), WWF Adria-Serbia office in Belgrade, and partner organizations and consultants within the rest of the region. To implement its conservation goals WWF Adria operates in the structure of different programmes (Marine, Freshwater, Protected Areas & Governance and Wildlife) which are contributing to protection of different ecosystems or to the improvement of governance of protected areas within the Protected Areas & Governance Programme.
Project ‘Climate Heroes: Youth voices for sustainable living’ aims to strengthen and drive youth engagement on the topic of climate change. It is a joint endeavor of WWF offices, youth networks, and assisted by mentors (business, experienced CSO representatives), united by a common vision and skills for empowering youth to contribute to halting climate change. Through building i) awareness, ii) empowerment and iii) engagement of youth, the project is looking to ensure that youth empowerment and youth-led content reaches a wide audience to raise awareness about the importance of tackling climate change and give possible solutions for sustainable lifestyle. Under the leadership of WWF Bulgaria, this project will be implemented in 4 countries in Central and Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Romania and Serbia. WWF Adria is responsible for project implementation in Serbia.
At the same time, we are looking to take the opportunity of this project to develop a structured Youth Empowerment and Mobilization Initiative, aiming to bring together the youth across the Western Balkans in a unified voice calling for the protection of ecosystems, building climate resilience and preserving and recovering biodiversity as the foundations for a healthy and prosperous future for both people and nature.
We are looking for an officer to join our team to a) implement ‘Climate Heroes’ project in Serbia, and b) support development of the Youth Empowerment and Mobilization Initiative in WWF Adria.
- Major Functions:
- Support Climate Heroes communications and awareness raising pillars of project
- Supports implementation of Climate Heroes empowerment and engagement pillars of project
- Supports conceptualization of Youth Empowerment and Mobilization Initiative
- Liaises with ongoing WWF Adria communications work to find synergies and multiplications
- Supports WWF Adria overall communications work
- Detailed Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participates in the development of overall project external communication strategy and implements it in Serbia
- Develops external communications materials (PRs, reports, publications) in collaboration with Climate Heroes project manager
- Monitors external development to recognize and take advantage of opportunities to promote project and its results; proactively creates opportunities for public engagement by planning and organizing communication / promotion / media events
- Supports engagement and communication with project stakeholders in agreement with project manager
- Develops and maintains relationships with media and communication stakeholders pertinent to the project; supports ongoing relationships with media established through other WWF Adria work in Serbia
- Participates in the project level design of awareness raising and engagement activities / campaigns, and drives and supports their implementation in Serbia
- Develops various communications and promotion products required by the project, in coordination with WWF Adria communications work to ensure maximum synergies and impacts
- Supports project management, monitoring and evaluation by providing input relevant for communication and awareness raising activities
- Regularly communicates with WWF Bulgaria, as the lead partner on the project, and other project partners as needed; participates in project meetings and project-level events, as foreseen by the work plan
- Liaises with Climate Pact for Impact project team in Serbia to ensure coordination and synergies between communication and awareness raising activities of two projects
- In collaboration with the Climate Pact for Impact project team organizes celebration of the Earth Hour in Serbia
- Collaborates with WWF Adria colleagues responsible for communication activities, media work and public outreach in order to ensure synergies and multiplications of impacts
- Supports Youth Empowerment and Mobilization Initiative officer in conceptualizing the initiative
- Supports development of WWF Adria Individual Fundraising in Serbia.
- Profile:
- University degree in the broad area of communication, design or other related fields, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience, including developing communications strategies and building campaign plans, as well as knowledge of youth communications’ trends
- Broad understanding of climate change and conservation issues; youth perspectives, trends and issues in Serbia and Western Balkans
- A good knowledge of key skills needed for the work in communications: writing skills, media relations, strategy development and implementation, web administration, community management; experience in campaigning
- Use of designing programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator is an advantage
- Experience building and maintaining partnerships with stakeholders, communicating with donors
- Excellent written and spoken Serbian and English languages required

- Good inter-personal and organizational skills, including self-motivation and an ability to initiate actions and to follow through to satisfactory completion,

- Identifies opportunities to fund Youth Empowerment and Mobilization Initiative beyond Climate Heroes project
- Liaises with WWF Youth Engagement movement, relevant WWF Global Initiatives / Areas of Collective Action and Innovation, and specific existing programs
- Detailed Duties and Responsibilities:
- Climate Heroes project
- Ensures activities are implemented according to project work plan; leads on monitoring, evaluation and reporting of project activities and achievements
- Participates in project level design of capacity building / youth leadership training program and network creation approaches, and implements those activities in Serbia
- Participates in project level design of action initiatives to be promoted by the youth, and implements relevant actions in Serbia to drive youth engagement, including also youth-driven climate policy proposals
- Engages with youth and relevant stakeholders to mobilize their participation in the project
- Develops and maintains partnerships with relevant stakeholders for successful implementation of project in Serbia
- Supports development and implementation of awareness raising and communications campaigns by providing technical input during material preparation
- Participates in budgetary and administrative tasks to ensure transparent and efficient use of funds
- Works closely with project communicator and project administrator to ensure timely, efficient and effective project implementation
- Regularly communicates with WWF Bulgaria, as the lead partner on the project, and other project partners as needed; participates in project meetings and project-level events, as foreseen by the work plan; represents WWF Adria in the project partnership
- Liaises with Climate Pact for Impact project team in Serbia to ensure coordination and synergies between activities of two projects
- Promotes project results externally, in media and within WWF Network
- Support of Youth Empowerment and Mobilization Initiative
- Analyses global, European, regional and national youth engagement and empowerment movements to understand how to build the Initiative from the ground-up, including WWF led and supported initiatives (e.g. Generation Earth, Youth for one planet)
- Researches opportunities, most feasible topics for youth engagement in Western Balkans
- Explores previous and ongoing youth engagement and education activities in WWF Adria to utilize in youth engagement program
- Proposes models for building the Initiative in WWF Adria, and supports WWF Adria director of conservation in selecting a path to follow
- Develops ‘business case’ for WWF Adria youth engagement program
- Maps potential funding opportunities to support continuation and development of the Initiative; participates in fundraising and, as needed, leads proposal development
- Investigates possible partnerships, develops and manages relationships with possible partners / stakeholders
- Liaises with relevant colleagues, initiatives and working groups on youth engagement across WWF Network
- Profile:
- University degree in conservation, social sciences and management, education, environmental management, social development, sociology, social anthropology or other related fields.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in any of the following areas: social development in conservation, human right based approach, community based conservation and management of natural resources, stakeholder’s engagement and participation, youth empowerment
- Knowledge of climate change and conservation issues; youth perspectives, trends and issues in Serbia and Western Balkans,
- Demonstrated experience in project management and reporting; design of initiatives or programs with forward looking objectives and fundraising priorities
- Experience building and maintaining partnerships with stakeholders, communicating with donors
- Serbian language required, as well as excellent command of English in speaking and writing.
