WWF ADRIA SERBIA PROJECT OFFICER
 
 
Position title: Wildlife Project Officer
Reports to: Wildlife Program Manager
Location: Belgrade, Serbia
Starting/Ending: March 2021 – December 2022
Engagement: Full-time, fixed-term contract
 
 
Mission

The mission of Wildlife Program is to ensure securing and/or recovering of populations of the most threatened and ecologically, economically and culturally important wild species. Main threats to wildlife in Adria can broadly be divided into two categories: (i) habitat loss / degradation, and (ii) low understanding of benefits of wildlife to systemic conservation of environment.

“Successful Wildlife Crime Prosecution in Europe” (SWiPE) project aims to discourage and ultimately reduce illegally killed European wildlife, supporting the recovery of threatened European biodiversity and the health of ecosystems. The project is implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, and Ukraine. One of the main tasks would be to help reaching 10 Million citizens/general public by using exemplary cases of wildlife crime verdicts in communication, in order to change the sense of impunity and low risk of such crime.

The Interreg project “Protecting and restoring ecological connectivity in the Mura-Drava-Danube river corridor through cross-sectoral cooperation” (lifelineMDD aims to improve the ecological quality of the river corridor and to establish cooperation structures for the future biosphere park. The project partners will collaborate to improve biodiversity and restore the natural river dynamics through a cross-sectoral partnership and the implementation of revitalization measures.

Wildlife Programme Officer is expected to engage in the LIFE project “Successful Wildlife Crime Prosecution in Europe” (SWiPE) in Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska); support implementation of the Interreg project “Protecting and restoring ecological connectivity in the Mura-Drava-Danube river corridor through cross-sectoral cooperation” (lifelineMDD) in Serbia; support development of the wildlife program in Serbia and manage SWIPE team in Serbia.

This position should: a) manage the implementation of the ‘SWiPE’ project; b) support implementation of the lifelineMDD; and c) develop projects and initiatives contributing to the wildlife objective on reducing illegal use & exploitation of species and habitats.
 
 
  1. Major Functions
  • Supports development and implementation of wildlife program’s strategy for WWF Adria objective on reducing illegal use & exploitation of WWF Adria priority species and habitats in line with WWF goal on Zero Extinction
  • Supports integration of wildlife program into relevant WWF Global Practice and other global/European initiatives and projects with focus on a) WWF Wildlife Crime community of practice and WWF Wildlife Crime Initiative; b) Wildlife Crime EU coordination (IWT, CITES); c) WWF Network Sturgeon Strategy
  • Supports fundraising for wildlife program in accordance with WWF Adria strategy
  • Responsible for project monitoring and reporting, supports program manager in reporting at program level
  • Direct people management of wildlife project team in Serbia
  • Ensures project implementation according to project plans and timelines
  • Identifies adaptive management strategies for the project and implements them 
  • Builds partnerships with organizations working on the projects
  • Leads engagement of external stakeholders relevant for the project and programme
 
  1.     Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop project and initiatives contributing to the WWF Adria Wildlife strategy focused on reducing illegal use & exploitation of WWF Adria priority species and habitats in line with WWF global goal on Zero Extinction
  • Engage in the Wildlife Crime EU coordination (IWT, CITES), representing WWF Adria
  • Ensure implementation of the LIFE Successful Wildlife Crime Prosecution in Europe (SWiPE) project, within the responsibility of WWF Adria-Serbia with main focus on the following actions:
  • implement project activities, report on project implementation to SWiPE Project Lead (WWF Bulgaria) on behalf of WWF Adria-Serbia, and support implementation of the Project in Republic of Srpska of Bosnia & Herzegovina
  • maintain close cooperation with partners at the European and Adria level, ensuring the implementation of joint project activities, and supporting smooth integration of stakeholders in project activities
  • inform, actively engage and maintain good relations with key-actors/target audiences/stakeholders, in a constructive and solution-oriented approach (taking into account their needs and responsibilities), in order to address challenges in combating wildlife crime
  • assist in communication of project´s implementation, actions and results to key-actors/target audiences/stakeholders, interested parties and general public
  • actively participate and represent WWF Adria-Serbia in project workshops and meetings
  • Support implementation of the project lifelineMDD (“Protecting and restoring ecological connectivity in the Mura-Drava-Danube river corridor through cross-sectoral cooperation”) activities
  • Perform any other duties directly or indirectly necessary to ensure that the implementation of projects is compliant with the WWF Standards and Policies (including quality assurance, environmental and social safeguards) and the projects’ administrative requirements
 
  1. Profile:
 
Qualifications
 
  • University degree in and of the following areas: environmental science, natural resources science, environmental law or related fields
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in environmental science, natural resources science, wildlife, environmental policy or related fields
  • Basic knowledge of monitoring & evaluation systems at the project and programme level and project administration (budgeting, administrative procedures)
  • Experience in formal communication with authorities/institutions (national and international) and lobbying / advocacy
  • Experience with project management
  • Good inter-personal and organizational skills, including self-motivation and ability to initiate actions and to follow through to satisfactory completion
  • Fluent oral and written Serbian and very good English communication skills are required;
  • Broad knowledge of the geography, societies, economies, politics and pertinent issues of conservation and development within the program’s scope of work
 
Availability to travel (always respecting national and international Covid travel limitations.
