The Amazon of Europe Bike Trail, a long-distance cycling trail, is following the landscape of the world’s first UNESCO 5-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube. With 1.250 km of cycling trails following both sides of the rivers in 27 stages through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia, the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail is an example of a unique sustainable tourism product that boosts the local economy and invests in nature conservation.

“We are proud to contribute with our project to the development of the UNESCO 5-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube which was proclaimed on 15th of September 2021. Our cycling trail is fully equipped with signposts, resting stops, and along the route, all cyclists can enjoy local cuisine at the facilities of Amazon of Europe Bike Trail partners. If cyclists need any additional assistance, our Booking Centre is one phone call away to help them”, said Urška Dolinar, Amazon of Europe Bike Trail Project Manager.

Amazon of Europe Bike Trail project was truly diverse and it gathered different stakeholders, such as tourism organisations, service providers, municipalities, regions, NGO’s and protected areas, to create new opportunities for the region and local communities.

“Although COVID-19 did set us back a bit, we managed to test our cycling tour with a few explorer tours and to collect feedback from the first Amazon of Europe Bike Trail cyclists. In following months, we are going to improve our services, formally establish Destination Development Organization within the partnership which will secure the sustainability of the cycling trail in the long run”, added Dolinar.

Area of UNESCO 5-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube spans across 1 million hectares of extraordinary natural and cultural landscapes and is the hotspot of biodiversity and rare natural habitats – floodplain forests, gravel and sand bars, and oxbows.

“It is amazing to be able to contribute to the protection of this stunning landscape by our ‘Cycle for Nature’ programme which helps funding nature protection projects in the region and all cyclists who choose Amazon of Europe Bike Trail get the chance to directly contribute to the protection of this unique region”, said Ivana Korn Varga from WWF Adria.

You can discover the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail on our product website, where you can find comprehensive information about the route and the adventures and discoveries of both, South and North routes. To make cycling easier, we developed a mobile application but also a guide book and map you can download from our website.
